It need not be - I got a return flight (an hour each way) for €20.38 last year.

Good timing, I’m in the Miami airport drinking $13 beers waiting for my flight

So why is a connecting flight (that’s TWO flights) often so much cheaper than a direct flight?

Price is made up from a lot of variables, like airlines you use, type of planes you fly, demand on the specific route you fly at that given time, how early are you booking, limited time offers and more.

Connecting flights can be marketed to a larger pool of passengers, some people only want to book one leg, whereas nonstop flights have to be filled entirely by people wanting to fly that specific route.
